Author: alunjohn

The last couple of years have seen a big increase in the number of people attending social media training courses. Going back just 3 or 4 years marketing managers, PR folks and communications managers were getting to grips with SEO and PPC. They were attending workshops and conferences to learn how to optimize their web pages for the search engines. They were getting to grips with page titles, cached pages, internal links, external links, H1 tags, meta tags, Google verification, etc, etc.

These tools and technqiues have been one of the main providers of traffic to our websites and have worked extremely well for many companies.

Today, however social media is starting to permeate pretty much everything that we do. In the UK 1 in 6 pages that we view on the Internet is on Facebook. It's not just celebrity tweeters who can be found tweeting their thoughts but also individuals and increasingly businesses. Companies are turning more to video to get information about their products and services out there and business photographs are appearing more and more on sites like Flickr. Chief Executives have discovered that blogs are as powerful, possibly more powerful, than press releases and pubs and pizza houses are discoverng that geo location marketing sites like Foursquare can be an effective tool for promoting their businesses and products.

With so many options for social media marketing and a landscape that is forever changing, it is not difficult to see why companies are sending their staff on social media training courses and even bringing tutors in-house to train key individuals. Individuals need to know what the latest technologies are and how they can be applied to their own business. They also need to explore what are the issues surrounding social media, the potential pitfalls and also the huge benefits that can be reaped by using it.

Firms that approach social media positively and have the full backing of their managers and colleagues can leapfrog over companies that don't As more and more of us are getting used to social media and are tweeting more, adding Facebook status updates, leaving reviews and ratings and even creating videos; we also expect that the companies that we deal with allow us to interact with them in much the same way.

A good social media training course will be able to give you an overview of the subject, explore social media tools, be on top of the latest applications and platforms, help you understand how these tools can be used by your organisation and provide you with a foundation fro developing your own social media strategies.

Social Media is a new discipline and one which companies need to know how to fully harness to reach new audiences and to create better relationships with existing ones.
